About Penny

Penny’s paintings begin without intention.

No preliminary sketches, no fixed horizon line, no plan. Just paint, instinct, and the freedom to go wherever the work demands. That freedom is deliberate. Life is ful of obligations, expectations, and competing demands; the canvas offers something rare, a space entirely her own, where no rules apply and no apology is needed.

Working from her studio in Hampshire, Penny draws constantly from the landscape around her: the churn of a winter sea, a sky breaking open after rain, the wide stillness of an estuary at low tide. But these are felt rather than observed, translated through gesture and texture rather than careful representation. The paint is loaded, physical, immediate.

Penny doesn’t always know what a painting is about until it’s finished. Sometimes not even then. That uncertainty is the point.
